The company was incorporated in 1888 and built a 40-mile railway line from Fairhaven (in Bellingham) north to Blaine on the international boundary. It operated this line under GN control until it was formally dissolved in 1905, its properties being folded into those of the Seattle and Montana Railroad. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
